Hiking Sabino Canyon

Contributed by Milford Woods

The best place to hike around here is Sabino Canyon. There is just so much to look at as I walk along the path and I never get bored. Usually I leave in the morning before the sun is even up. I set the home alarm system and head out. The drive takes about 45 minutes if the roads aren’t really busy. I take a cup of coffee for the drive and a abackpack full of water and snacks and a sketchbook.

After parking, I can just head out. I don’t have to check in with anyone and sometimes I am out there all alone. Eventually, throughout the day, people will trickle in and out of the canyon, but for the most part, it is pretty quiet. There are several stops that I like to make during the hike. They are shaded places that I can sit and just relax before moving on.

My favorite thing to do is get out the sketchbook and just draw a few of the things that I see. Last time I went, some of the cactus were in bloom and I just made a few notes and sketched an outline. Next time, I plan to bring my camera so I can take a few pictures before heading back home.
